During a normal pregnancy process, an embryo gets implanted on the lining of the uterus. This uterine lining is called endometrium, which is present inside the uterus. Once the fertilization occurs, pregnancy happens if an embryo gets stuck or gets implanted in the endometrium.

Now during an IVF procedure, the importance of the thick uterine lining increases. Before transferring the embryo, the doctor will take measurements of the lining to ensure the required thickness for the implantation. The ideal lining thickness is seven to eight millimetre. In the case of in vitro fertilization, a too-thin uterine lining can cause failed implantation or lead to pregnancy loss.

Causes of Thin Uterine Lining

Thin uterine lining can cause implantation problems which in turn will prevent pregnancy, to occur. There are some reasons behind thin lining like:

  • Deficiency of estrogen.
  • Low level of blood flow in the uterus.
  • Fibroids in the uterus.
  • Infected endometrial cells.

All of these reasons can cause the uterine lining to become thin. You need to treat a specific anatomical issue before pregnancy that can cause thin endometrium. Also, the effect of endometriosis on the ovaries is undeniable. Before the implantation, the egg comes from the ovary to the uterus from the fallopian tube. In the case of endometriosis, the egg cannot travel to the uterus due to the tissues, and as a result, pregnancy can’t happen.

Even if the egg reaches the uterus, endometriosis can damage the eggs along with the sperms of a man. This damage happens due to the secretion of the compounds in the body. Until the doctors get to know the exact reason for its occurrence, it causes more inflammation in the body. One can become pregnant with seven to eight-millimetre of uterine thickening but, this is risky and can cause future failure in pregnancy. So, doctors recommend improving the uterine lining before the embryo transfer procedure.
