Fibroids and Its Impact on Preganancy

Did you know that 70-80% of women between the ages of 20-50 years have fibroids? Yes, that’s true! Fibroids are that common. Though these abnormal muscular tumours don’t necessarily cause major concerns, yet they can contribute to complications in pregnancy. IVF specialists of Gunjan IVF World – a leading IVF center in Ghaziabad, have penned down this informative blog to share their valuable knowledge about fibroids and how fibroids impacts chances of pregnancy.

Fibroids

Fibroids are aberrant but non-cancerous tissues that can develop inside or outside the uterus. These are made up of muscles and connective tissue from the uterine wall. These can vary in sizes, numbers and locations. A fibroid can be as small as a rice grain and as big as a watermelon.

“Not many women are aware that they have fibroids because these rarely come with symptoms. It grows because of a hormone called estrogen. During pregnancy, estrogen levels increase, causing the growth of this tissue. This is why the disease gets diagnosed mostly during pregnancy, the first trimester to be specific. This growth, depending on their size, numbers and location, can cause several adverse impacts on pregnancy,” explains Dr. Gunjan Gupta, a renowned IVF specialist Ghaziabad and Founder & Director of Gunjan IVF World – the best IVF clinic in Ghaziabad. Gunjan IVF World is the best IVF centre in Delhi, with three other highly advanced clinics in Ghaziabad, Meerut and Noida.

Fibroids impact on pregnancy

Here are the common adversities and problems caused by fibroids during preganancy

  • Miscarriage : Fibroids inside the uterine cavity can cause miscarriage. Compression of fibroids increases uterine irritability and contractility. Also, the blood supply gets compromised, affecting foetal growth. “In the second trimester, if the fibroid grows too big in size, it interferes with the supply of blood to the foetus. As a result of which, the blood gets collected and starts rotting from inside. This causes severe pain and can lead to miscarriage. This is why medications are prescribed during pregnancy to control the growth of the fibroids,” says Dr. Garima Sharma, Centre In-Charge and Consultant at Gunjan IVF World – best IVF clinic in Janakpuri, New Delhi
  • Placental abnormality : Fibroids cause multiple placental abnormalities, including placental abruption and placenta previa. “In placental abruption, the placenta tears away from the uterine wall before delivery. The baby doesn’t receive enough oxygen and nutrition, while the mother can go into shock from heavy bleeding,” says Dr. Aastha Raheja, Consultant at Gunjan IVF World – a well-known IVF center in Delhi. Placenta previa is a condition where placenta implants over the cervix, causing heavy bleeding during vaginal delivery
  • Increased chances of C-section delivery : “Reasons like incomplete cervical dilation and poor contracting make it difficult to have a normal delivery. This is why the chance of having a c-section or caesarean delivery gets higher. Also, breech birth makes c-section delivery more common says Dr. Shubhda Gupta, Consultant at Gunjan IVF World – the best IVF centre in Noida.
  • Breech birth : Bigger fibroids reduce the space for the baby to flip into the correct foetal position, increasing the risk of a breech birth.
  • Preterm delivery : A high fibroid burden can stress the uterus, resulting in preterm contractions or premature water breaks.
  • Postpartum haemorrhage : After delivery, the blood vessels that feed the placenta can continue to bleed because of inadequate contraction. Heavy bleeding is a medical emergency, and the mother needs to be taken care of immediately

Can fibroids lead to infertility ?

Fibroids have been linked to infertility, though the acute reason has not been identified yet. Dr. Anshu Dhar, Consultant at Gunjan IVF World – renowned IVF clinic in Indirapuram, Ghaziabad explains why not to worry. For one reason, if there are a large number of fibroids on the uterine lining, a fertilised egg can’t be implanted properly. This is why, in some cases, fibroids are removed before pregnancy. But most of the time, women with fibroids do get pregnant in the natural way and deliver healthy babies.”
