Endometrial hyperplasia
Endometrial hyperplasia is a condition where the endometrium thickens abnormally. Endometrium is the uterine lining that sheds during menstruation. It is also the tissue where an embryo gets implanted to grow into a foetus. While some cases of endometrial hyperplasia can be non-cancerous, some can lead to ovarian cancer.
Types of endometrial hyperplasia
“There are two types of endometrial hyperplasia. One is without atypia, which doesn’t involve any unusual cells. The other is atypical endometrial hyperplasia, which involves unusual pre-cancerous cells. This type can lead to endometrial cancer. Luckily, in most of the cases the disease is curable with treatments and doesn’t lead to cancer,” says Dr. Gunjan Gupta, IVF specialist Ghaziabad and Founder & Director of Gunjan IVF World – the best IVF center in Ghaziabad. Gunjan IVF World has four highly advanced IVF clinics in Ghaziabad, Delhi, Meerut and Noida.
Endometrial hyperplasia causes
“Endometrial hyperplasia is caused by either a decrease in progesterone levels or an increase in estrogen levels. Both of these hormones are important for a regular menstrual cycle. An imbalance creates too many cells or abnormal cells, resulting in hyperplasia,” adds Dr. Garima Sharma, Gynaecologist Janakpuri and Consultant & Centre In-Charge at Gunjan IVF World – the best IVF centre in Delhi.
Endometrial hyperplasia symptoms
Dr. Anshu Dhar, Gynaecologist Ghaziabad and Consultant at Gunjan IVF World – renowned IVF clinic in Ghaziabad, says, “Generally endometrial hyperplasia is diagnosed using ultrasound. But, there are some early symptoms you can look out for.” These symptoms are –
- Longer and heavier than usual period
- Irregular menstrual cycles, lasts shorter than 21 days or longer than 35 days
- Spotting between periods
- Vaginal bleeding after menopause
“Although endometrial hyperplasia is generally benign, in some cases it can lead to issues with fertility. Implantation of the embryo can be disrupted due to a thickened lining of the uterus,” says Dr. Shubhda Gupta, leading Gynaecologist in Noida and Consultant at Gunjan IVF World – the best IVF centre in Noida.
Dr. Aastha Raheja, Consultant at Gunjan IVF World – the best IVF center at Indirapuram, Ghaziabad, tells women not to be worried. She says, “Advancements in the field of science and technology have made it possible for the treatment of endometrial hyperplasia. Depending on the severity, one may go under hormonal therapy where they will be prescribed a synthetic form of progesterone, called progestin. For more severe cases, one may need surgery.”
Endometrial hyperplasia sometimes cures on its own. Also, it responds well to treatments. So, have routine checkups with your gynae and stay updated about any changes in menstrual cycle.
