Read the article to be aware of the causes of vaginal dryness.
What is vaginal dryness?
“Under normal circumstances, the vaginal lining is lubricated with fluids which helps the lining to stay thick and elastic. But, there could be cases when the tissues in the vagina get dry, thin and lack moisture. That is called vaginal dryness,” stated Dr. Gunjan Gupta Govil, Medical Director & Founder of North India’s most awarded IVF clinic twice in a row by ET Healthworld – Gunjan IVF World. Dr. Gunjan is also a well-known gynaecologist Ghaziabad with 25+ years of experience in the field of infertility treatments and reproductive medicine. She leads a team of IVF experts who operate from highly advanced clinic is Indirapuram, Janakpuri, Meerut and Noida. “It can occur at any age,” she added.
Who does it affect mostly?
“Vaginal dryness can cause pain during sitting, peeing, exercising or even during sexual intercourse. It is most common among women during or after menopause when the estrogen levels decline,” said Dr. Anshu Dhar, Consultant at a leading IVF clinic in Ghaziabad – Gunjan IVF World.
“It would be surprising for you to know that almost 17% of women of the age group of 18-50 years complain of vaginal dryness during sexual intercourse, even before menopause happens,” said Dr. Shubhda Gupta, renowned gynecologist Noida and Consultant of Gunjan IVF World – the best IVF centre in Noida.
What could be the most common causes of the change in hormonal levels that lead to vaginal dryness?
“It is important for you to know that the hormone estrogen helps in keeping the vaginal lining healthy and moisturised. With low levels of estrogen, the tissues in the walls of the vagina get dry leading to thinning of the walls,” added Dr. Garima Sharma, Consultant and Centre In-Charge of the best IVF center in Janakpuri, New Delhi.
Here are some of the possible reasons behind vaginal dryness.
- Low estrogen level: Vaginal dryness is extremely common when the body does not produce enough estrogen – a hormone that keeps the vaginal wall moisturised.
- Use of contraceptive pills: Women who wish to delay pregnancy and consume birth control pills often face the issue of vaginal dryness.
- If a woman is breastfeeding: The fluctuations in hormonal levels associated with lactation can also lead to low levels of estrogen. “Vaginal dryness when you are in the breastfeeding period is temporary. With the decrease in the frequency of breastfeeding and return of menstruation, there is an improvement in the condition,” mentioned Dr. Aastha Raheja, Consultant at a well-known IVF clinic in Indirapuram.
There could be non-hormonal reasons of vaginal dryness too. Here are some of the possible cause:
- Use of perfumed soaps or washes: The use of such products often alter the pH balance and increase the risk of dryness and infections.
- Frequent douching in and around the vagina: Douching can remove or alter the natural mucus of the vaginal walls.
- Use of antihistamines: Consuming medicines like antihistamines and decongestants can lead to reduced moisture and mucus throughout the body, even the vagina.
So, now that you know about vaginal dryness and what are its causes, check with your doctor on how you can manage it.
