Infertility vs. sterility: Know the difference

IVF experts of the best IVF clinic in Delhi – Gunjan IVF World share an insightful article on the difference between infertility and sterility.

Infertility and sterility are two of the most common jargons that most couples get to hear when they find it difficult to get pregnant naturally. Most of them find it difficult to understand what’s the difference between both. IVF experts of the best IVF clinic in Ghaziabad – Gunjan IVF World have attempted to share an informative article on what they are and how they are different.

Is infertility and sterility the same?

It is very important for everyone to understand that infertility and sterility are two different conditions when it comes to reproductive health. Though they are often used interchangeably but they are completely two different health conditions.

Understanding infertility

“Infertility is a medical condition in which a couple finds it difficult to conceive after 12 months (or 6 months if the woman is over 35 years of age) of trying for natural conception,” said Dr. Gunjan Gupta, well-known gynaecologist Ghaziabad and the Medical Director & Founder of Gunjan IVF World – three times winner of North India’s best IVF clinic chain by Economic Times. This best IVF clinic in Ghaziabad also has three other highly advanced centres at Janakpuri, Noida and Meerut.

Infertility could be categorised into two types – primary infertility and secondary infertility. Primary infertility refers to a couple’s inability to conceive ever whereas secondary infertility refers to the condition where the couple faces difficulty getting pregnant the second time after having a baby earlier.

Causes of infertility: “The potential causes for infertility could be many. However, the ones that are most common include hormonal imbalances, ovulation disorders, low sperm count or poor sperm motility, uterine anomalies or blocked fallopian tubes and most importantly, lifestyle factors like smoking, drinking, unhealthy eating, obesity, stress, etc.,” stated Dr. Garima Sharma, Consultant and Centre In-Charge of the best IVF clinic in Janakpuri – Gunjan IVF World.

Infertility is a condition that can be successfully treated with the help of fertility medications. In some cases, couples are advised Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) or In-Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) to fulfil their dreams of parenthood. The other possible treatment option includes surgery to repair tubal blockages, etc.

Understanding sterility

“Sterility refers to a condition where there is a complete and irreversible inability to conceive, which means there is no possibility of biological conception. This inability could be a result of congenital conditions, surgical removal of reproductive organs, or medical treatments like chemotherapy,” mentioned Dr. Garima Sharma.

People who face sterility issues often include women with removed uterus (hysterectomy), men with vasectomy, or people with genetic conditions that cause the malformation of reproductive organs.

“It is vital for people to know that sterility is a condition that cannot be treated or reversed. That does not mean people suffering from sterility cannot embrace parenthood. Thankfully with the advancements in the field of reproductive sciences, couples with sterility have options like using donor eggs or sperm, surrogacy or adoption to become parents,” concluded Dr. Gunjan Gupta.
