What do we mean by female infertility?
“If a woman is unable to conceive naturally even after trying for over six months or a year, it could be because of female infertility. This medical condition can be a result of a wide range of causes like hormonal, structural, genetic, and lifestyle-related,” stated Dr. Gunjan Gupta, renowned gynaecologist Ghaziabad and Medical Director & Founder of Gunjan IVF World – three times winner of North India’s best IVF clinic chain by Economic Times. Gunjan IVF World – the best IVF centre in Ghaziabad has three other highly advanced clinic in Janakpuri, Meerut and Noida.
Common causes of female infertility
- Ovulatory disorders: “In most cases, women face ovulatory disorders like PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome), thyroid issues and hypothalamic dysfunction. The most common symptom is irregular or absent periods. These conditions can be overcome with treatment of the underlying causes like thyroid, etc.,” said Dr. Garima Sharma, Centre In-Charge and Consultant at Gunjan IVF World – the best IVF clinic in Janakpuri.
- Damaged or blocked fallopian tube: “Infertility problems in women could also be a result of PIDs (Pelvic Inflammatory Diseases), endometriosis, previous surgeries or ectopic pregnancy. These can be treated either through a surgery where the tubal blockages are repaired or removed. IVF is also considered in which the tubes are bypassed entirely,” mentioned Dr. Gunjan Gupta.
- Endometriosis: “It is a condition where tissues similar to the endometrial lining grow out of the uterus in the pelvic region. This might cause painful periods, severe pelvic pain and most importantly, infertility. The possible treatments for endometriosis include hormonal therapy (birth control, GnRH agonists), laparoscopic surgery where lesions are removed and IVF if natural conception has failed,” mentioned Dr. Garima Sharma.
- Uterine or cervical anomalies: There are instances where women suffer from uterine or cervical abnormalities like fibroids, polyps, congenital issues, cervical stenosis, which may come in the way of their fertility. These can be treated either surgically i.e., through hysteroscopy for fibroids or through assisted reproductive techniques.
- Primary Ovarian Insufficiency (POI) / Premature Menopause: Some women might face the regular functionality of their ovaries even before the age of 40 years. This is known as premature menopause and it can be treated through hormone therapy where the symptoms are managed. In worst cases, donor eggs are used for IVF.
- Lifestyle factors: Excessive smoking, drinking alcohol, strenuous exercises, obesity or stress also contributes to female infertility. The best way to manage infertility is through lifestyle modifications i.e., quitting harmful substances, shifting to healthier diet, going for stress management, doing moderate exercises, etc.
- Age-related issues: Fertility declines after the age of 35 years. The best way to manage this is by going for fertility preservation (egg freezing), IVF with or without donor eggs, etc.
