IVF experts of the best IVF clinic in Ghaziabad – Gunjan IVF World pen an article about a very commonly asked question.
The science of reproduction has advanced a lot in today’s times. Couples who have been finding it difficult to conceive naturally can now embrace parenthood because of assisted reproductive techniques. Surrogacy is one such approach that has helped many couples to fulfil their dream of a baby. IVF experts of the best IVF centre in Delhi – Gunjan IVF World answer a common query that many couples planning to opt for surrogacy have through this article.
Does a surrogate mother share blood with the baby?
“Couples who are opting for surrogacy as an approach to become parents often have a query. Will the surrogate mother share her blood with the baby? Well, the answer to that is – No. A surrogate mother does not share blood with the baby at all,” stated Dr. Gunjan Gupta, a noted gynaecologist Ghaziabad and Director & Founder of Gunjan IVF World – the best IVF clinic in Ghaziabad. Gunjan IVF World is the third time winner of North India’s best IVF clinic chain by Economic Times and has four highly advanced clinics at Indirapuram, Janakpuri, Noida and Meerut.
Reasons why a surrogate does not share blood with the baby
Placental barrier: “It is important for everyone to know that during pregnancy, the placenta connects the baby to the surrogate mother’s uterus. Though during this time period, there is regular exchange of nutrients, oxygen and waste products between the baby and the surrogate mother but the placenta does not allow direct mixing of the blood. Instead, substances flow through a semi-permeable membrane,” mentioned Dr. Garima Sharma, Consultant and Centre In-Charge of Gunjan IVF World – a leading IVF clinic in Janakpuri.
Difference in blood and DNA: During gestational surrogacy, a baby is conceived with the egg of the mother or donor and sperm of the father or donor. The surrogate’s egg is not used. Therefore, there is no genetic connection between the baby and the surrogate. Hence, the baby and the surrogate mother both have different blood.
In cases of traditional surrogacy (where the surrogate offers her egg) too, both baby and surrogate do not share blood despite being genetically-related.
