Chances of pregnancy in azoospermia cases

An article by IVF experts of the best IVF clinic in Ghaziabad – Gunjan IVF World about a very commonly asked question.

Male infertility is one of the common factors behind a couple’s inability of having a baby naturally. In some cases, men are faced with the issue of having zero sperm count which is commonly known as azoospermia. IVF experts of the best IVF centre in Delhi – Gunjan IVF World share an interesting article about azoospermia and the chances of pregnancy with this condition.

What is azoospermia?

“Azoospermia is a condition in men where there is no sperm in the semen ejaculated. This condition is one of the rarest affecting 1 in 100 men. This is a severe case of infertility, in which a man is unable to father a child naturally. However, that does not mean the man can never become a father. There are a few possible options of treatment depending on the type of azoospermia the man has,” stated Dr. Gunjan Gupta, renowned gynecologist Ghaziabad and the Medical Director & Founder of Gunjan IVF World – three times winner of North India’s best IVF Clinic chain by ET Healthworld. Gunjan IVF World is the best IVF clinic in Ghaziabad with three other highly advanced clinics at Janakpuri, Meerut and Noida.

Types of azoospermia

Broadly there are two types of azoospermia. They have been listed below:

  • Obstructive azoospermia: It is a condition where sperm is produced in the testicles but is unable to leave the body because of some blockage in the reproductive canal. This obstruction can happen in the epididymis, vas deferens or any other part of the
  • Non-obstructive azoospermia: A medical condition where the formation of sperm in the testicles is very less or non-existent.

Can a man with zero sperm count get a woman pregnant?

“A very common question that we are always asked by patients is – ‘can a man with zero sperm count get a woman pregnant’? Well, the possibility totally depends on the type of azoospermia. The commonly available treatments include sperm retrieval and assisted reproductive techniques. In some cases, sperm can be retrieved directly from the testicles through surgical interventions. Procedures that are performed include Testicular Sperm Extraction (TESE) or Epididymal Sperm Aspiration (PESA). After extracting the sperm, it is washed and prepared for use in IVF. The sperm can be injected into an egg through Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI),” said Dr. Gunjan Gupta.

“In severe cases of azoospermia, where no sperm can be retrieved, patients are also suggested the use of donor sperm. The sperm can be used in assisted reproductive technologies like IVF or IUI to achieve pregnancy,” commented Dr. Garima Sharma, Consultant & Center In-Charge at the best IVF clinic in Janakpuri – Gunjan IVF World, who else!

“In cases where the condition has been caused because of hormonal imbalance, there are certain treatments available that can help stimulate sperm production. hCG injections might be administered in cases where low levels of hormones like testosterone are responsible. However, success is not guaranteed, and sperm production might not always resume,” added Dr. Garima Sharma.

While a man with zero sperm count cannot achieve pregnancy through natural conception, there are still advanced reproductive technologies and treatments that can offer alternative paths to fatherhood, depending on the underlying cause of the condition. Consulting a fertility specialist or urologist is the best approach to explore the available options.
