If you are pregnant via In Vitro Fertilization (IVF), the process of calculating conception date and due date can be a bit different than with a traditional pregnancy.

However, it is important to understand the calculation process so that you can better plan for your baby’s arrival.

Let’s dive into how to calculate both the conception date and due date in an IVF pregnancy.

Calculating Conception Date

In an IVF pregnancy, conception does not occur on the day that the embryo is transferred into the uterus.

This is because embryos retrieved during an IVF cycle can be frozen and stored for many years before being thawed and transferred into the uterus.

The actual time of conception is dependent on when fertilization occurred, which could be days or weeks before embryo transfer.

For example, if embryos were frozen immediately after fertilization and then thawed and transferred 5 days later, then conception would have actually occurred 5 days prior to transfer.

Calculating Due Date

When calculating the due date in an IVF pregnancy, doctors will generally use one of two methods:

  1. LMP method or
  2. Ultrasound method

With LMP (Last Menstrual Period) method, your due date will be calculated by adding 40 weeks to the first day of your last menstrual period (LMP).

However, this method may not be accurate since it assumes that ovulation occurred 14 days after your last menstrual period – but this may not always be true depending on how long ago fertilization occurred (which can happen many days after ovulation).

For this reason, many practitioners prefer using the ultrasound method which measures fetal age by performing an ultrasound between 7-14 weeks gestation. This method is more accurate since it takes into account actual fetal age rather than a calculation based on assumed dates.

Calculating both the conception date and due date in an IVF pregnancy can differ from those in a traditional pregnancy as there are multiple variables involved such as when fertilization occurred or when embryos were transferred into the uterus.

It is important for pregnant women to understand these calculations so they know exactly when their baby will arrive!

Knowing these dates can help them better plan for their baby’s arrival as well as anticipate any special needs they may have throughout their pregnancy journey.

If you are pregnant via IVF, make sure to discuss with your doctor how they will calculate these dates so you can best prepare yourself for your little one’s arrival!
