Knowing the differences between IVF and IUI

Gain valuable insights into the similarities and dissimilarities between IVF and IUI from this informative blog by IVF experts of the best IVF centre in Delhi – Gunjan IVF World.

The journey of getting pregnant and having a baby is not the same for everyone. A lot of couples cannot fulfil this dream in a natural way and seek help from fertility treatments. Advancements in the field of science have helped couples embrace parenthood through Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART). In-Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) and Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) are two of the most commonly used such techniques.

“It can be very confusing and overwhelming when starting fertility treatments with all the new terms and information. But, it is very important to know the procedures before making a decision. IVF and IUI are two of the most common approaches to fertility treatment, but they have their own advantages and disadvantages,” says Dr. Gunjan Gupta, leading IVF specialist Ghaziabad, and the Medical Director & Founder, Gunjan IVF world – the best IVF centre in Ghaziabad.

IUI or Intrauterine Insemination

“In this process, sperm are injected directly inside the uterus. It’s a simpler procedure compared to IVF, less invasive, non-surgical and takes a shorter time. Basically, by putting the sperm directly inside the uterus, this process shortens the path for the sperm, reducing the chance of damage. It’s often the first step of fertility treatment for couples trying to conceive,” says Dr. Aastha Raheja, Gynaecologist Ghaziabad, and Consultant at Gunjan IVF World – the renowned IVF center in Ghaziabad.

IVF or In-Vitro Fertilisation

“IVF involves a few steps, including ovary stimulation, egg retrieval, fertilisation, and embryo transfer. The female partner is given some medication to produce multiple eggs. During the IVF cycle, these eggs are retrieved and fertilised in the lab using sperm to create embryos. These are then transferred into the uterus or frozen for future use,” explains Dr. Shubhda Gupta, Gynecologist in Noida, and Consultant at Gunjan IVF World – the best IVF clinic Noida.

Differences between IVF and IUI

“The major difference is where the fertilisation takes place. One can say IUI is more natural as the fertilisation is taking place inside the body, whereas in IVF it takes place in the lab. IVF also needs a surgical procedure, which is why it is more invasive than IUI. But the success rate of IVF is higher than that of IUI,” says Dr. Garima Sharma, Consultant at the best IVF center in Janakpuri, Delhi – Gunjan IVF World. Most patients can expect a 50-70% success rate in one single cycle with IVF. On the other hand, the success rate of three to four rounds of IUI is around 40-50%.

Which is the one for you?

One might need IUI in the case of:

  1. If the cause behind infertility is not identified
  2. Male factor infertility
  3. As a first step of fertility treatment

One might need IVF in the case of:

  1. Advanced maternal age
  2. Poor ovarian reserve/Low AMH
  3. Severe male factor infertility
  4. Blocked fallopian tubes that cannot be opened surgically
  5. History of repeated miscarriages
  6. Endometriosis
  7. Several failed IUI attempts

“Your fertility doctor may advise you for either IVF or IUI after considering your age, health condition, and priorities. Do remember that the success rate for both of the procedures depends on these factors too. The need for the procedure and the results both vary from person to person,” says Dr. Anshu Dhar, Consultant of the best IVF centre in Indirapuram – Gunjan IVF World, where else.
