IVF experts of the best IVF center in Delhi – Gunjan IVF World share a short article on laser assisted hatching.
IVF treatment involves many complex procedures that some couples have to go through to embrace parenthood. Laser Assisted Hatching (LAH) is one of them that very commonly used in IVF treatment. Read this article by IVF experts of the best IVF centre in Ghaziabad – Gunjan IVF World to know what it is and who should consider it.
What is laser assisted hatching?
“Laser Assisted Hatching or LAH is a laboratory technique in IVF treatment that helps embryos implant on the endometrial wall easily. The technique uses a laser to thin or create a hole in the zona pellucida, which is the outer shell surrounding the embryo. This is done to facilitate hatching – a vital process that is needed for implantation,” mentioned Dr. Gunjan Gupta, well-known gynaecologist Ghaziabad and Founder & Medical Director of Gunjan IVF World – a leading IVF clinic in Ghaziabad. Gunjan IVF World is the third time winner of North India’s best IVF clinic chain by economic Times and has four highly advanced IVF centers at indirapuram, Janakpuri, Noida and Meerut.
Who should consider LAH?
Laser Assisted Hatching can be recommended to individuals or couples undergoing IVF for the following:
Advanced maternal age: “This is mostly recommended to women of 35 years of age or more. The zona pellucida in older women tend to get harder, which makes it difficult for the embryo to hatch naturally. Women above 35 years of age benefit from LAH because it decreases chances of implantation failure,” said Dr. Garima Sharma, Consultant & Centre In-Charge of Gunjan IVF World, a well-known IVF clinic in Janakpuri.
Previous failed IVF cycle: Couples with two or more unsuccessful IVF attempts are also advised LAH since it improves chances of implantation.
Poor embryo quality: This technique is also suggested in cases where embryos have a thicker zona pellucida or slow development, which might cause trouble in hatching. LAH helps overcome this challenge.
Frozen thawed embryos: Freezing embryos can sometimes toughen the zona pellucida, making it difficult for hatching. Laser Assisted Hatching can be used to improve implantation rates after Frozen Embryo transfer (FET).
Diminished ovarian reserve or elevated FSH: these are signs of decreased fertility. In such cases, Laser Assisted Hatching can maximise the implantation chances with fewer available embryos.
Use of Preimplantation Genetic Testing (PGT): This procedure is performed before embryo biopsy, which is done to rule out genetic abnormalities, as it allows easier access to cells without damaging the embryo.
Who should avoid LAH?
Women below the age of 35 years with good quality embryos and no IVF failures may not benefit from LAH. Also, it can slightly increase the risk of monozygotic twinning (identical twins). That is why it is not used for all IVF patients.
