Reasons why a surrogate does not share blood with the baby
Placental barrier: “It is important for everyone to know that during pregnancy, the placenta connects the baby to the surrogate mother’s uterus. Though during this time period, there is regular exchange of nutrients, oxygen and waste products between the baby and the surrogate mother but the placenta does not allow direct mixing of the blood. Difference in blood and DNA: During gestational surrogacy, a baby is conceived with the egg of the mother or donor and sperm of the father or donor. The surrogate’s egg is not used. Therefore, there is no genetic connection between the baby and the surrogate. Hence, the baby and the surrogate mother both have different blood.
In cases of traditional surrogacy (where the surrogate offers her egg) too, both baby and surrogate do not share blood despite being genetically-related.
