What is surrogacy?
“Surrogacy is an arrangement where a woman, known as a surrogate, agrees and carries a pregnancy to term for a couple. The surrogate is not genetically involved with the child usually. She does not contribute her egg, but instead an embryo is implanted into her uterus which she carried to term,” stated Dr. Gunjan Gupta, well-known gynaecologist Ghaziabad and Founder & Medical Director of Gunjan IVF World – the best IVF clinic in Ghaziabad. Gunjan IVF World has three other highly advanced clinics in Janakpuri, Meerut and Noida and is also the third time winner of North India’s best IVF clinic chain by ETHealthWorld. “Surrogacy success rates in India are generally high, ranging between 50% and 95%, depending on various factors such as the method used, the quality of eggs and sperm, and the experience of the fertility clinic,” added Dr. Gunjan Gupta.
Success rate based on the method
“Success rates with self-eggs and sperm usually range between 50-60% per embryo transfer. In cases where donor eggs or sperm is used for IVF, the success rates are approximately around 70-75%. The rate of success with Frozen Embryo Transfers (FETs) is usually around 60-65% whereas in cases where Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) is used, the success rate is around 50-65%,” mentioned Dr. Garima Sharma, Consultant & Centre In- Charge at Gunjan IVF World – a leading IVF clinic in Janakpuri.
Possible factors influencing success rates
There are many factors that influence the success rate of surrogacy. These include the following factors.
-
Age of the egg provider: Age plays a big role. A woman below the age of 35 years is believed to be best suitable with a high chance of success because of better egg quality.
- Health of the surrogate: Another important factor for success of surrogacy is the health of the surrogate. A healthy surrogate will take the pregnancy to term successfully.
- Quality of the medical facilities: “the most important factor that determines the success of surrogacy is the capability of the facility. Clinics with highly advanced infrastructure, technologies and expert medical teams contribute to higher success rates,” said Dr. Gunjan Gupta.
Legal considerations in India
The Surrogacy (Regulation) Act, 2021 permits only surrogacy for married Indian heterosexual couples who have been married for at least five years and have been unable to conceive naturally.
If you’re considering surrogacy in India, it’s essential to consult with a reputable fertility clinic to understand the specific success rates and legal requirements applicable to your situation.
