The quality of sperm also plays a big role in the success of natural conception. In some cases, the couple’s inability to conceive can be a result of abnormal sperm morphology. What do we mean by abnormal sperm morphology?

“Abnormal sperm morphology refers to irregularities in the shape and structure of the sperm which could be an outcome of a variety of factors,” stated Dr. Gunjan Gupta, well-known gynaecologist Ghaziabad and Medical Director & Founder of Gunjan IVF World – three times winner of North India’s best IVF clinic chin by ETHealthWorld. Gunjan IVF World has four highly advanced IVF clinics at Indirapuram, Janakpuri, Noida and Meerut. “We have seen that in cases where the couple’s inability to conceive has been attributed to male infertility – sperm morphology has been the main reason. It is also something that most men are not aware of. That is why, we ensure our patients are aware of everything before they begin the treatment journey,” added Dr. Gunjan Gupta. Read this article to know about the many factors responsible for abnormal sperm morphology.

Causes of abnormal sperm morphology

Listed below are the possible factors leading to abnormal sperm morphology.

Medical or biological factors: “One of the topmost and most common factors causing irregular sperm shape and structure is varicocele. It is a condition where veins in the scrotum get enlarged and lead to raised testicular temperature. The rise in the scrotal temperature stands in the way of sperm production and development,” said Dr. Garima Sharma, Centre In-Charge and Consultant at a leading IVF centre in Janakpuri – Gunjan IVF World.

Another factor that causes damage to sperm morphology is the presence of genetic disorders like Klinefelter syndrome where there is an extra chromosome in men which leads to reduced testosterone levels thereby impacting sperm structure and function. Hormonal imbalances, i.e., irregular production of testosterone or other reproductive hormones also affect sperm development.

Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) or other infections like prostatitis or epididymitis also impact the shape and structure of sperm. In some cases, even undescended testicles can come in the way of sperm production and lead to abnormal sperm morphology, commented Dr. Shivansh Jaiswal, gynecologist Noida and Consultant at the best IVF clinic in Noida – Gunjan IVF World, who else!

Testicular surgery or trauma, i.e., physical injury or surgery can also put a roadblock to healthy sperm production. Also, too much of oxidative stress can lead to damaged sperm DNA and structure.

Lifestyle and environmental factors: “Studies show that men who smoke, drink alcohol or are into drug use, are often faced with issues like lower sperm quality and abnormal shape. Anabolic steroids, marijuana, cocaine have negative impact on sperm. That is why there has been a drastic rise in male infertility cases. These practices should be avoided when planning to start a family,” said Dr. Gunjan Gupta.

“Frequent use of hot tubs, saunas or tight underwear can impact sperm structure and shape. Another important factor that should not be ignored is diet and obesity. Lack of nutrients like zinc, folate and antioxidants affect sperm health,” added Dr. Garima Sharma.

Radiation or chemotherapy can damage sperm production significantly. Stress too leads to hormonal imbalances thereby impacting fertility.
