Do you know that 1 out 7 couples i.e. 15% of couples in India are facing Infertility and are unable to conceive despite trying. The infertility rate is increasing day by day. Do you want to know why some couples do not conceive? In this article, let’s understand the top 6 reasons or causes of Infertility in women and men. We will also discuss their solutions.

The infertility rate is increasing day by day due to increased stress, competitive work environment, hectic and fast paced imbalanced lifestyle, urbanization, environmental toxins, delayed marriage and prolonged family planning.

Causes of Infertility in Female/Woman :

  1. Problems in Ovaries
    • PCOD –Poly Cystic Ovarian Disease (PCOD) is common lifestyle related disease in women which is aggravated by stress. PCOD can be controlled by weight loss and a healthy lifestyle. If required, laparoscopy can be done to puncture the cysts in the ovaries. The hormonal imbalance can be corrected by medicines also. PCOD is one of the leading cause of infertility.

    • Premature Ovarian Failure: In some women, ovaries stop producing enough Estrogen and other hormones at a young age. As a result, the eggs do not develop resulting in infertility. In such cases, IVF with donor egg can be done to become a mother.
  1. Blocked Fallopian Tubes: It’s a very common cause of infertility.Sometimes, one or both of the Fallopian Tubes of a woman are blocked. As a result, the egg cannot reach the Uterus and the fertilization with sperm doesn’t happen. The tubes can get blocked due to Endometreosis, TB in Uterus or an Infection in the tubes. Blocked tubes can be opened by Laparoscopy. If the woman’s age is more than 30 years, then IVF is recommended.

    Blocked Fallopian Tubes
    Blocked Fallopian Tubes
  2. Problems in Uterus:
  • Tuberculosis in Uterus: In India, (Tuberculosis) TB is Uterus is very common. The TB bacteria infects the uterus and causes severe damage to other reproductive organs such as Tubes, Ovaries, Endometrium etc. If left untreated, it may cause permanent Infertility. The Good News is that TB is Treatable and in many cases, the woman conceives during the treatment of TB.TB infection
  • Anomalies of Uterus: In some women, the shape of uterus is malformed and is developed differently from most women. These anomalies result in no menstrual period for very long, or heavy bleeding during periods, repeated miscarriages and Infertility. If you have conceived, the risk of miscarriage remains high. These are the different shapes of malformed uterus e.g. Bicornuate Uterus etc. In such cases, a surgical correction of the malformed uterus is recommended before proceeding for IVF treatment.

  1. Cervical Factors: If the Cervical mucus has Anti-Sperm antibodies that mistakenly kill sperm. They make it harder for the couple to have a baby. The solution is IUI (Intra Uterine Insemination). In IUI, the sperms are injected directly inside the uterus so that sperms can overcome the barrier of Cervical mucus. (Img Source: verywellfamily)
  2. Hormonal Imbalance: The imbalance of female reproductive organs esp. Thyroid and Prolactin can also cause Infertility.
  • Hyperprolactinemia: Prolactin is produced by the Pituitary Gland of brain. Excessive Prolactin results in Irregular periods, unwanted milky discharge from breasts and interferes with function of ovaries and Infertility. This condition can be treated with medicines.
  • Thyroid Problems: Low levels of Thyroid hormone interfere with the release of egg from the ovary and can cause Infertility. The thyroid levels can be brought to normal by medicines.

Causes of Infertility in Male/Man:

  1. Low or Nil Sperm Count: This condition is called Azoospermia. Males are found to be responsible for 20-30% of infertility cases. But, there is hope. Even if the sperm count is 1 million/ml (Normally its around 50-60 million/ml), IVF with ICSI can make you a father.

ivf treatment cost in india

A few decades ago, the wordIn-vitro fertilization or IVFappeared like some ‘mysterious practice’ and the mere thing that maximum public knew was that it was an infertility cure that helps childless couples complete their families via ‘test-tube babies’. Actually, people were uncertain about the process and even speculated how much a ‘test-tube baby process costs’!Numerous people have the misconception that since this is a non-natural process, the baby may not be normal. On the other hand, it is to be understood that though fertilization occurs outside the human body, once the embryo is transmitted in the mother’s uterus and the body accepts the transmission and shows pregnancy, it is a normal pregnancy like any other. IVF babies are as normal as any other babies physically, mentally and genetically. As the rate of infertility problems is rising, people are coming forward to learn more about IVF and how it can be said childless couples to conceive.

When a couple considers IVF treatment as an opportunity to grow their family, many facets need to be measured. The emotional, as well as medical facets, being the most important ones, but the cost of IVF treatment in Delhi is the key aspect. So, every couple inquires about Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART) and the cost associated with the treatment before visiting any IVF clinic. Today, in every 6 couples 1 couple is fighting against infertility issues and so IVF treatments have come a long way to aid couples and encounter the need of the day.

What is IVF cost (or test tube baby cost) in Delhi?

The Cost of IVF treatment in Delhi is still very much within your means when matched to other Western nations. Though, the cost of the IVF treatment depends on various factors. So, it’s better to break-down the expenses of an IVF process into separate stages, this break-down in the IVF package will aid couples looking for infertility cure in comprehending the cost of IVF.

IVF includes a chain of the procedure, like ovarian stimulation, egg retrieval process and embryo transfer. The cost of each procedure may differ from one another and will embrace the cost of laboratory studies, ultrasounds, and drugs. So, an aspiring couple going ahead for IVF should always inquire whether the treatment package quoted, involves the cost of fertility medicines, blood test, follicular observation, and ultrasound. Inquiringsuch details before starting the IVF procedure can save high medicinal bills.

The elements swaying the cost of an IVF cycle are-

Cost of Laboratory Examinations:

The infertility analysis will encompass laboratory examinations:

  • For Females: A Blood test (AMH TEST), this is to validate egg reserve and the levels of vital hormones afore and through cycle management. A blood test to validate viral indicators. Additionally, once an embryo transfer procedure is conducted, a blood test (Beta HCG) to check for pregnancy.
  • For Males: Semen examination to validate the sperm count, sperm motility and sperm morphology. Additionally, a blood test to check for viral indicators.

Cost of Ultrasounds:

Ultrasounds are a vital fragment of an IVF sequence as it aids to screen the ovaries to conclude when the eggs are prepared for retrieval. It also aids the gynecologist to examine a female’s reproductive morphology such as:

  • The Uterus’sshape and structure.
  • The endometrial thickness.
  • The size of the ovaries.
  • Antral follicle count provides an understanding of the number of eggs left in the ovaries.

Cost of Anesthesia:

The retrieval of the egg process is done under anesthesia and is usually overseen by an anesthesiologist.

Cost of Embryo Freezing:

During an IVF process, after transferring the embryo, if sustainable embryos are left then the patient can decide to store them via freezing or cryopreservation for future usage. This is charged separately.

Cost of Laparoscopy/Hysteroscopy:

A process such as laparoscopy and a hysteroscopy if indicated will be charged distinctly and thus upsurge the IVF cost.

Cost of OT Charges:

The Operation Theatrecost, nursing charges, and Doctor’s fees are also encompassed in the IVF package.

Factors that can influence the total of IVF treatment cost also depend on the kind of IVF that a couple chooses. Here are other factors that can affect the cost of IVF treatment:-

  • Self-IVF: If IVF is done using one’s eggs and sperm.
  • Donor Egg or Sperm IVF: The Donor egg IVF cost or Donor sperm IVF cost will be added because there are extra costs involved. Donor eggs IVF cost is actually more than donor sperm. Couples with extremely low fertility ranks may necessitate either donor sperm or eggs or both.
  • Donor Embryo IVF: The charges of donor embryo IVF is low as there is no requirement of stimulation medicines, as we are consuming a ready-made embryo for the embryo transfer process.
  • Surrogacy: The IVF surrogacy quotation is high because the prices for all the drugs and other allied expenditures of the surrogate, besides her living outlay will be involved in the IVF surrogacy package.

The cost of IVF treatment mainly is reliant on the age of the couple, the causes behind the patient’s infertility and their previous medical history. Therefore it differs from person to person.A couple has to prepare themselves emotionally, bodily and monetarily for planning for an IVF treatment. If a patient needs an estimation of IVF treatment cost, then they require giving the treating Fertility doctor a comprehensive medicinal history. So that the consultant doctor can draw a tailored treatment strategy and according to medical details given, the financial counselor can provide a comprehensive break-up of the tests and processes involved.

Before you plan to extend your fertility, take note of the following points:

Choose an optimum time for freezing so that there is no inconvenience in the process either by work, travel or any kind of social commitments. Consult the healthcare team to guide you for the most appropriate time to start the cycle.

What is the procedure?

In the egg freezing procedure, a woman may choose to have the eggs thawed, fertilized and transferred to the uterus as embryos to facilitate pregnancy in the future. It involves stimulating the ovaries with hormones to produce multiple eggs, thereafter retrieving the eggs from the ovaries and taking them to the laboratory. Here, at the lab, they are cooled at subzero temperature to be thawed at a future date.

Who would benefit?

Women under 38 years and wishes to preserve the option of having healthy, genetically related children for a later date. Egg freezing has proved beneficial for women who anticipate becoming pregnant sometime later in the future. IT enables them to become a genetic parent using their frozen-thawed eggs. Plus, reduces the risk of having children with chromosomal abnormalities associated with ovarian aneuploidy. Women with no partner or case of women moral concerns egg freezing is a suitable alternative to embryo freezing.

Egg freezing is popular since the late 90s. Used for fertility preservation for young women suffering from cancer who are at risk of sterility as a result of the disease or its treatment.

IVF-All you need to know about

In vitro fertilization or IVF is the most effective form of assisted reproductive technology.

Overview-what is IVF or In vitro fertilization

IVF is the most effective form of reproductive technology helps with fertilization, embryo development and implantation. It’s a series of complex procedures of insemination where an egg combined with sperm outside the body in a glass in a laboratory. Then, the fertilized eggs transferred to the uterus. A complete cycle of IVF takes around three weeks. It primarily aims to prevent genetic problems and assists with the conception of, child.

If you plan to conceive through IVF treatment, there are several stages which you need to undergo :

  • Ovulation Induction: In the first phase, the doctor could prescribe medication for synthetic hormone generation to simulate the ovaries for producing multiple eggs. It has done so that one or more eggs may develop after fertilization. Possible medications include ovarian stimulation injections, medicines for oocyte maturation and progesterone supplements.
  • Trigger Shot: Once the follicles ready, an injection is given to help eggs to mature completely and prepare them for fertilization. Within 36 hours of medication, eggs are ready for retrieval.
  • Ovum Pick Up (OPU): In this, an ultrasound probe inserted into the vagina to identify follicles for retrieving eggs. The matured eggs then kept in nutritive liquid and incubated. Healthy eggs infused with sperm to create embryos.
  • Sperm Collection: On the day of egg retrieval, a semen sample taken from your partner to separate sperms from the fluid in the laboratory.
  • Fertilization (ICSI): This is the most important stage of the IVF cycle. Depending on the complexity, fertilization can be carried out through the insemination or ICSI method. In insemination, healthy sperm and matured eggs are mixed and incubated overnight. In the case of intracytoplasmic sperm injection, a single sperm injected directly into each matured egg. The latter was chosen in case of poor semen quality, low sperm count or repeated failures in fertilization attempts during previous IVF cycles.
  • Embryo or Blastocyst Transfer: This three-day process is critical as some fertilized eggs transform into multi-celled embryos and further metamorphose into blastocysts. At this stage, they develop a fluid-filled cavity with tissues which ultimately separates into the placenta and baby.

Who are the right candidates

IVF procedure has proven to be a miracle for:

  • Couples who have not been able to conceive even after trying for more than 6 months.
  • People suffering from infertility problems including PCOS, endometriosis, tubal factor infertility, male factor infertility.
  • People who want some kind of control over the genetics of the baby.
  • Women who want pregnancy on demand.

What is the success rate

The success rate of IVF depends on certain factors including infertility cause, age factor and, where treatment’s done. According to research, depending on the age, the statistics claim that:

  • Pregnancy achieved at an average of 29.4% of all cycles.
  • IVF cycles that resulted in live births was on an average 22.4%

Cost cycle of IVF

An IVF treatment cycle is pretty much an expensive affair. The average cost for IVF ranges from Rs 70,000 to Rs 2,50,000. Besides, the medications vary according to the need

The risk associated with IVF procedure

There are several risks involved with IVF as discussed below:

  • Multiple births: It may occur if more than one embryo implanted in the uterine wall.
  • Pregnancy-induced Hypertension: Due to this procedure, mothers may suffer from high blood pressure.
  • Need for C-section: Usually, C-section delivery done to avoid any risk.
  • Preterm delivery and low birth weight: The probability of having a pre-term and weak baby are high with this procedure.
  • Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome: Swollen and painful ovaries due to side effects of IVF injections.
  • Birth defects in the baby
  • Risk of ovarian cancer
  • Other problems include anemia, diarrhea, nausea, stress, hot flashes.

What is Mini or Micro IVF?

Mini IVF is also called micro or minimal stimulation IVF. It follows the same pattern as in conventional IVF i.e. retrieval of the egg, fertilization of sperm and egg in simulated laboratory conditions finally followed by embryo transfer.

It differs from the conventional procedure in the amount of medication to be used for stimulating the ovaries for egg production. In mini- IVF smaller medication doses are used to produce few eggs. In many cases, no drugs are used for stimulating the ovaries.

Who Should Consider Mini-IVF?

Mini-IVF is a viable option in the following cases:

  1. If the woman has PCOS and is vulnerable to developing ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS).
  2. If the woman has low ovarian or egg reserves. In such cases, more fertility drugs would have no impact on producing more eggs.
  3. If the woman has time constraints or is in a hurry. The treatment cycles in mini-IVF can happen back to back with no rest required.
  4. If the woman is about to undergo cancer treatment and wants to preserve her fertility. The fertility drugs used in conventional IVF might worsen cancer.
  5. If the woman has fear of needles. Mini- IVF employs far lesser injections.

Medications Taken During Mini-IVF

In conventional IVF, gonadotropins (Gonal-F, following, etc) are used to stimulate ovaries for egg production. For MINI-IVF, Clomid is generally used to stimulate the ovaries.

In some cases, small doses of gonadotropins may also be used to produce few eggs. Alternatively, mini- IVF can also be performed with no ovarian stimulating drugs. This, referred to as the natural cycle, is appropriate in cases of fallopian tube blockage or cases of male sterility. Apart from the stimulating drugs, GnRH antagonist drugs such as Anatagon and Cetrotide are required to prevent early or untimely ovulation.

Success Rates for Mini-IVF

The success rate for mini-IVF is generally lower than conventional IVF but mini- IVF has a better success rate than IUI ( Intrauterine insemination) with additional benefits.

Though the success rate is lower in comparison, mini- IVF benefits in the manner that it causes no ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS). Hence, Mini-IVF is the preferred choice for women at risk of developing OHSS.

Mini-IVF After Failed Conventional IVF

Mini-IVF can be operational and work after failed conventional IVF.

The reason being mini- IVF is designed to produce fewer but quality eggs.

Conventional IVF can fail because of multiple factors which include: poor egg quality, stress, failed implantation, hormonal imbalances, etc. Thus, a lower stimulation technique such as mini-IVF can produce the desired effect as it can produce higher quality eggs.

Cost of Mini-IVF

The biggest advantage of Mini-IVF is the lower cost per cycle. The cost of a mini-IVF is generally 50 to 60 percent less than the conventional IVF.

However, mini-IVF costs more than IUI but still, the success rate of mini-IVF is greater than IUI.

The possible disadvantage of mini-IVF is that it is not viable if the number of eggs is needed. Also, if a cycle fails in mini-IVF, there will be no extra embryos for further cycles. We at Gunjan IVF provide the low cost ivf treatment in delhi ncr with a high success rates, because we know the joy of hearing mumma.

To sum up, even though the success rate of mini-IVF is low in comparison to conventional-IVF but looking at its low cost and lower risk of leading to ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome owing to optimized use of fertility drugs, it is a decent enough option for women.
