Procedure

If you plan to conceive through IVF treatment, there are several stages which you need to undergo :

  • Ovulation induction: In the first phase, the doctor could prescribe medication for synthetic hormone generation to simulate the ovaries for producing multiple eggs. It has done so that one or more eggs may develop after fertilization. Possible medications include ovarian stimulation injections, medicines for oocyte maturation and progesterone supplements.
  • Egg extraction: Once the follicles ready, an injection is given to help eggs to mature completely and prepare them for fertilization. Within 36 hours of medication, eggs are ready for retrieval.
  • Transvaginal Ultrasound Aspiration: In this, an ultrasound probe inserted into the vagina to identify follicles for retrieving eggs. The matured eggs then kept in nutritive liquid and incubated. Healthy eggs infused with sperm to create embryos.
  • Sperm Retrieval: On the day of egg retrieval, a semen sample taken from your partner to separate sperms from the fluid in the laboratory.
  • Fertilization: This is the most important stage of the IVF cycle. Depending on the complexity, fertilization can be carried out through the insemination or ICSI method. In insemination, healthy sperm and matured eggs are mixed and incubated overnight. In the case of intracytoplasmic sperm injection, a single sperm injected directly into each matured egg. The latter was chosen in case of poor semen quality, low sperm count or repeated failures in fertilization attempts during previous IVF cycles.
  • Embryo or Blastocyst Transfer: This three-day process is critical as some fertilized eggs transform into multi-celled embryos and further metamorphose into blastocysts. At this stage, they develop a fluid-filled cavity with tissues which ultimately separates into the placenta and baby.
